Diwali starts with dhanteras. Dhanteras is also known as dhantrayodashi and it comes on 13th lunar of Krishna paksh and in the Kartik month.
According to the mythological legends during the kshir sagar by other gods dhanvantri god appeared on this day and so it is celebrated as dhanteras. It is therefore known as an occasion for purchasing silver, gold and steel utensils. On this particular day Hindu people and others who celebrate this festival light up a lamp or diya in their houses. Sweets are also offered to yamraj who is known as lord of deaths.

After dhanteras it comes Choti Diwali and it is celebrated widely all over. It falls on 14th day and signifies the victory of good things over the evil. According to the mythologists it was the day when the lord Krishna killed narakasura and save the well being of others.
On this particular day people take bath early in the morning and massage themselves with fragrance.
Small diyas and rangolis are made to celebrate this festival. In the evening seeing the mahurat prayers and Prasad is offered to the goddess and to ancestors of the family.
The Laxmi Pujan On Diwali
This is the most important day of Diwali and is celebrated in the significance of goddess Laxmi. People offer prayers, chants mantras, and aartis and also offer sweets to the goddess Laxmi and also god Ganesha. Diyas, lamps, candles and other fire works are lit to signify the festival and after that younger member of the family seek blessings from god and their elders for their good fortune.
The last day of the diwali festival is known as govardhan pooja and it signifies the victory of god Krishna over indra. According to the famous mythologists, it is said that god Krishna managed to convince people to not worship Indra and to only concentrate on the sole farming.
God Krishna successfully taught them to worship the beauty of nature and not Indra. Because of this good indra angered and he flooded the village with water and to protect people and other villagers and their homes god Krishna then lifted the whole mount Govardhan.
On this day also people light diyas and candles and burn crackers to celebrate the jubilation. The same festival is known and celebrated as balipratipada and padva in Maharashtra state. While in Gujarat, this festival is known as the new year. After this person also celebrate bhai doojaor bhai bij very enthusiastically. On this day brothers and sisters meet and express their affection and care.
